Thompson Announces Appointment of Mayra Briggs to the U.S. Naval Academy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson announced that Ms. Mayra Briggs, a senior at State College Area High School, has accepted a fully-qualified appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. Briggs hails from Port Matilda, Pa., and comes from a supportive family background.

Representative Thompson commended Briggs, stating, "Mayra is a great example of a well-rounded student and active community member. From her participation in the Spanish Club and Speech and Debate Club to her volunteer work with Dancing Against Hunger and Mini-Thon, she clearly has what it takes to succeed at the United States Naval Academy." He also expressed confidence in her abilities, saying, "I know that her hard work as a student will serve her well as she starts her military career. I wish her the best of luck as a midshipman in Annapolis."

Briggs has been actively involved in various extracurricular activities at her high school, including serving as the Spanish Club President, Director of Recruitment for the Speech and Debate Club, and participating in Dancing Against Hunger. Additionally, she is a member of the State College High School Girls Tennis Team and holds certifications as a lifeguard and pool manager for the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Department.

Briggs' dedication to both academics and community service has earned her this prestigious opportunity to further her education and training at the U.S. Naval Academy.
