On May 22, 2024, Rep. Kathy L. Rapp (R-Warren/Crawford/Forest), Republican chair of the House Health Committee, announced that a bill aimed at improving lab oversight for medical marijuana has passed the House with a vote of 196-6. The bill includes an amendment introduced by Rapp which enhances oversight in several key areas.

The amendment mandates annual inspections for labs and requires them to submit proposed modifications to standard operating procedures within 30 days. It also clarifies that violations will be subject to civil penalties and grants the Department of Health the authority to revoke or suspend licenses.

"We owe it to Pennsylvanians to ensure that medical marijuana is free from impurities, like any prescription or over-the-counter drug," Rapp stated. "The General Assembly enacted the medical marijuana program to help children with seizures, veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and others suffering from a wide range of medical conditions. They should feel confident that the products they get from Pennsylvania dispensaries are safe, and this bill will help make sure that's the case."

House Bill 2208 now proceeds to the Senate for further consideration.
