U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson announced the release of Pennsylvania school teacher Marc Fogel, who had been detained in Russia for over three and a half years. Thompson expressed gratitude to President Trump, Secretary Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for their efforts in securing Fogel's release.

Members of the Pennsylvania delegation shared their reactions. Senator McCormick stated, "I am thrilled that Marc Fogel is finally coming home after years of being wrongfully held in Russia," while acknowledging the work done with the Administration to secure his freedom. McCormick added, "As I told Marc's Mom, Mafa, when we spoke in August, we had to do everything possible to get Marc home."

Representative Kelly recalled a meeting between President Trump and Fogel's mother on July 13, 2024. He said, "Today, President Trump, Secretary Rubio, and the Trump administration have fulfilled this promise." Kelly highlighted his advocacy for Fogel's release and noted that both Marc and his mother are from Butler County.

Marc Fogel taught history courses at schools attended by children of U.S. diplomats in several countries before being detained on August 14, 2021. He was serving a 14-year sentence for possession of medical marijuana used for treating a back injury.

Fogel's case drew comparisons to that of WNBA player Brittney Griner due to similar charges. Until his release today, he was held in a Russian penal colony.
