Rep. Lee James and the House Republican Policy Committee, led by Chairman Josh Kail, held a hearing in Titusville to explore the uses of brine from oil and gas wells. Brine has been used for over 150 years on unpaved roads to suppress dust and on icy roads during winter.
The hearing, titled "Brine Spreading," took place at Drake Well Museum and Park. Testifiers included Burt Waite, a retired geologist; Jim Trussel, supervisor of Hamlin Township; David McClain, supervisor of Keating Township; and Steve Goodwill, supervisor and roadmaster of Columbus Township.
"Brine spreading is a proven method for communities to ensure safer roads for their residents, especially if the community has limited resources," said James. He emphasized the importance of discussing its effectiveness and impact on the community and environment.
Kail added, "Great opportunity lies beneath our feet," expressing hope for ongoing discussions about recovering byproducts from former industrial sites in Pennsylvania.
