Rep. Kathy L. Rapp (R-Warren/Crawford/Forest), the Republican chair of the House Health Committee, has announced that a bill to improve lab oversight for medical marijuana, including her amendment, has passed the Pennsylvania House with a 196-6 vote.

Rapp's amendment seeks to enhance lab oversight by implementing annual inspections, requiring submission of proposed modifications to standard operating procedures within 30 days, and clearly stating that violations are subject to civil penalties. The amendment also grants the Department of Health the authority to revoke or suspend licenses.

"We owe it to Pennsylvanians to ensure that medical marijuana is free from impurities, like any prescription or over-the-counter drug," Rapp stated. She emphasized that the medical marijuana program was established to assist children with seizures, veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and others with a range of medical conditions. "They should feel confident that the products they get from Pennsylvania dispensaries are safe, and this bill will help make sure that’s the case."

The bill will now proceed to the Senate for consideration.
