U.S. Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson has announced that Avary Powell from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has accepted a fully-qualified appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Powell is currently a senior at Punxsutawney Area High School and is the daughter of Melissa and Mark Powell. Her grandparents are Margaret and David Young, as well as Carol and Gary Stonbraker, all residents of Punxsutawney.

"Avary is an outstanding young woman who excels academically and demonstrates strong leadership in her community," said Rep. Thompson. "Her dedication and work ethic as a student will undoubtedly serve her well as she embarks on her military career at the United States Naval Academy. I have no doubt that she has the potential to one day lead the Academy. I wish her the very best as she begins her journey as a midshipman in Annapolis."

In addition to her academic achievements, Powell holds positions as Senior Class Secretary and Vice President of the National Honor Society. She also participates in varsity sports, serving as captain for both basketball and softball teams, and is involved with Keystone Girls State.
