In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed $48.34 billion budget for the 2024-25 Fiscal Year, Representative Lee James of Venango/Crawford expressed his concerns. James stated, "I was disappointed that this budget would drain our reserves and Rainy Day Fund, which House Republicans fought hard to build up in the event of an economic downturn. Taxpayers would lose even more money if this unaffordable, irresponsible, and misleading plan were to come to fruition."

James further highlighted some of the major increases in government spending, including $2.5 billion and $1 billion in Basic Education Funding. While acknowledging the importance of funding educational institutions, he expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of these investments, saying, "There are few evident solutions that would create transformational change to help children improve test scores and better prepare them for the world ahead."

However, James did acknowledge that there were some positive aspects of the budget proposal. He mentioned the continued support for fire and emergency medical services personnel, a 23% increase in funding for four new State Police cadet classes, and a new $15 million line item for industrial site preparation. Despite these positives, James emphasized the need for further discussion and negotiation to protect taxpayers and ensure appropriate funding for essential services.

It is important to note that the budget address is just the initial step in a lengthy process, and there is still a long way to go before reaching an agreement that satisfies all parties involved. James concluded by stating, "We have a long way to go to reach an agreement that protects taxpayers and appropriately funds core necessities."
