U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson (PA-15) and a bicameral group of Members of Congress have urged President Biden to approve a request by Governor Josh Shapiro for a major disaster declaration for Pennsylvania. The appeal follows severe storms and flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby earlier this month.

The Members emphasized the importance of federal assistance to help residents cover uninsured or underinsured expenses as they recover from the storm's damages. "Individual Assistance from the federal government is critical for helping households and individuals cover uninsured or underinsured expenses and needs as they recover from Tropical Storm Debby’s damages," they wrote.

The letter was signed by U.S. Senators Bob Casey (PA) and John Fetterman (PA), along with U.S. Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (PA-6), Matt Cartwright (PA-8), Madeleine Dean (PA-4), and Susan Wild (PA-7).

Governor Shapiro has already issued a disaster declaration for 28 counties, authorizing $5 million in state funding for immediate response efforts. However, additional resources may be required to address long-term recovery needs.

The full text of the letter highlights the significant impact on multiple counties and the need for swift federal aid to support recovery efforts.
