The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) has approved grants to support local law enforcement agencies in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. The funding is part of the 'Local Law Enforcement Support Grant Program', established by lawmakers in the 2022-2023 state budget.
Senator Joe Pittman, Representative Donna Oberlander, and Representative Jim Struzzi announced the approval of these community safety grants. These funds are intended for projects aimed at enhancing public safety, such as upgrading communication systems, acquiring body-worn or in-car cameras, improving recruitment and retention efforts, providing training, installing surveillance cameras, and purchasing automated license plate readers.
Senator Pittman highlighted the urgency of these investments due to Pennsylvania's high violent crime rate. "Across our state we have seen a spike in crime that is greatly concerning and that must be addressed," Senator Pittman said. He emphasized the importance of equipping local law enforcement with necessary tools to ensure public safety.
Representative Oberlander noted the significance of information sharing for effective law enforcement. "This grant will enable Kittanning Borough police to purchase the equipment necessary to do so," she stated.
Representative Struzzi underscored the role of safe communities in maintaining local infrastructure and economy. "Providing safe communities is a fundamental role of government," he remarked.
Grant recipients include Kittanning Borough in Armstrong County receiving $196,000 for Records Management System hardware/software, a data analyst, and computers; and Indiana Borough in Indiana County awarded $581,566 for radio upgrades across municipal departments.
Statewide, PCCD has approved grants totaling $135 million for 197 law enforcement agencies.
